No. The quantity of mercury already used for other industrial applications far surpasses the quantity that will be used in all the new lights. The pollution will be there, but it won't be overwhelming. The environmental benefits of using the new lights will (in theory) far outweigh the impact of pollution. The mercury in question is already in the environment -- it isn't as if it is a new compound being created to manufacture the lights.

Genetically modified foods seem a lot more dangerous than the potential mercury pollution from these bulbs. These new bulbs won't cause more of an overwhelming pollution problem than green house gases or plastic waste for example. At least with mercury we know what dangers we're facing, with genetically modified foods no-one has a clue what's to come!
