I do it too, it's awesome. They don't have a script for what to say, and they're usually a bit reserved to begin with, so it starts off slow. I like to think that I make their day better, either that or they're going to blog about "some random annoying guy who wouldn't shut up when I was trying to change his account"

No, if I have to call Then it's a pretty good chance Im already in a bad mood..I don't have any back and forth with Techs, unless it's about the problem. Dead time to me only means he's wondering what to do next.

Having worked in tech support, I can tell you that it's very rare for people to attempt anything approaching normal conversation during "dead" periods. The people who did try such things just got on my nerves because it meant that the time I usually had to myself I now had to dedicate to the inane chatter of a customer I didn't want to speak to in the first place. Particularly annoying were questions like "Busy today?", "When do you get off?" and "Get problems like this a lot, do you?"
