I've seen people keep plastic coverings on their furniture permanently. Why do they do this, and isn't it uncomfortable?

The purpose is to keep the furniture clean. If they keep the covers on when you visit, maybe they're trying to tell you something.

well people who are very cheap and who want to buy a couch once and never again keep it on so it dosnt get dirty and lasts them there whole life,

Well, it's easier to clean the plastic covering than the upholstery. If you want to keep your couch looking stainless, albeit bizarre and awkward, I'm sure it's pretty effective.

When I was growing up my grand mother used to have the plastic furniture coverings you mentioned... I was a precocious child and had no problems questioning the plastic. According to my grandmother, it was to "help the furniture last longer". She didn't have any children, and only saw her grand children a few times a year at best, yet I've seen photos that indicate she ALWAYS had the coverings on... I think it was a case of undiagnosed OCD! She was and is a clean freak!
