  • Well, it's easier to clean the plastic covering than the upholstery. If you want to keep your couch looking stainless, albeit bizarre and awkward, I'm sure it's pretty effective.
  • When I was growing up my grand mother used to have the plastic furniture coverings you mentioned... I was a precocious child and had no problems questioning the plastic. According to my grandmother, it was to "help the furniture last longer". She didn't have any children, and only saw her grand children a few times a year at best, yet I've seen photos that indicate she ALWAYS had the coverings on... I think it was a case of undiagnosed OCD! She was and is a clean freak!
