Both bagels and lox are traditional foods of Jews originating from Europe. Since both foods existed in the culture, I assume it was natural for folks to try eating them together. An example of another culture combining fish and a starch: raw fish and rice in Japan

ohh a nice slice of salmon on top or mixed in with the cream cheese is just so tasty...it's different, but it's good

I am not a fan of lox..however, smoked whitefish and sliced onion on a bagel with creamcheese is to die for! Knocks my sox off! But lox..naw..don't like 'em! :)

I occasionally love some nice Alaskan smoked salmon on my bagels with cream cheese. It's just so de-lish!
