I know that some games on the PS3 require you to update the system to play them, but you can also update via internet. Should you do this, and if so how often?

You only have to update the game if you want to play (and have your scores recorded) online. Accept the update and then cancel it. It will tell you that your scores will not be uploaded until you update and if that's OK with you, cool. As far as updating the system itself, I usually cancel out of it at the beginning of my game and when I am through, find the update in your menu and run it. Keep an eye on it (if you can) as some updates require a restart...although it has been my experience that the system usually restarts itself.
