Are there really such thing as opposites? for example people would claim hot and cold are opposites but arnt they really just different perceptions of temperature? and night and day are apperntly opposites but they are just differents times in a day.

Matter and anti-matter. Debt and credit. Holes and hills. Movement North and South or Up and Down. Positive and negative charges. In each case, if you put the two together they cancel out.

i know what you mean by this question....like, having £200 isnt really the opposite to being £200 in debt...but it is, i think your perception of what opposition defines may be slightly out. if two things cancel eachother they are defined opposites. if they meet at the same point if moved towards eachother at equal line and speed....they are opposites.

Hot and cold, night and day, can be thought of in the same way. As a circle, hot being one extreme cold being the other and as you move around the circle you go through the various stages of temperature, warm, tepid etc until you reach the other extreme. They are opposite in that they are on opposite sides of the circle.

Yes there are such things as opposites. Think about opposite sex. Male and Female of opposite sexes. (My own personal thought) I believe that the opposite of everything must exist because to me, everything is a balance between the opposite of one thing and the other. Such as good and evil. Since evil is the other part or missing part of evil, it is the opposite in order to tell what is evil or what is good.

You need context. For instance in the context of times of the day night is opposite to day. In the context of your sense of temperature hot and cold are opposite. In the context of colors you can use the color wheel. Yellow and purple, green and red, orange and blue are all oposite. In the context of a force on a beam you have compression or tension (push or pull).

it's really a question about a word there's an assumption in the word "opposite" that each thing has only one opposite (not two or more) i don't think there's an assumption that everything has an opposite (what's the opposite of a Superman™ lunchbox?) 212 degrees and 32 degrees are hardly opposites, so hottER and coldER (than you are) are opposite directions
