Help answer this question below.
Some fans come equipped with thermoresistors that regulate voltage to the fan based on how hot or cold the Thermistor gets. A Thermistor changes it's resistance as heats and cools, allowing for more or less electricity to flow past it; Thus adjusting the speed of the fan, all with out any software or computer control.
they are usually just wired straight into the 12v circuit in the power supply unless it is a posh one with a speed adjustment on the back. if its going round too slow or is too loud it is probably worn out, the annoying thing about that is unless your seriously good with electronics you have to replace the whole power supply as it is dangerous to take it apart.
I believe it is on as soon as you turn on power.to keep the system cool.if it overheats then you could have major problems with your pc. I read about it in one of those pc books. I don't know what would be more expensive though, buying a new pc or taking it to have it fixed.
If the fan has stopped moving then you need a new power supply. You could replace the fan, but it's not much cheaper than the whole PS. also the fan will be sodiered not plugged into the ps. so just replace it.
I was about to download a video on my Toshiba laptop when my computer shutdown. I need to update my driver. How should I do this?

My power supply stopped working after I tried to scan with my new color laser printer on. Both heavy power users. I checked and am sure the PSU is bad. I installed a new PSU and everything powers up but I can't get a picture. Tried resetting the BIOS.

I plugged my computer into a station that was running 230v power. It will no longer turn on of course. I would like to know what will need to be replaced to repair it. I was thinking it would be the whole power supply, am I correct?

You're reading Follow up question to a previous one..... is the fan on a computer power supply controlled by any software/firmware or is it always on as soon as the PC is powered up?
