  • Much of the American (and, by extension, world) economy would collapse, since TV advertising is, by far, the most effective.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels this way! In my community they will give you a free box if you can't afford one. How about not spending money ensuring that the poverty stricken have tv and provide some health care ?
  • If we all quit watching television and "took our lives back" most likely there would be an interesting surge in democratic involvement. Here is why: The more people communicate with one another rather than passively absorb opinions, the more complex and complete their world-view becomes. It is difficult to be out and about in your respective community without developing a proportional awareness of how your community could be improved. Interest in community is the root of activism. This is exactly why Television has been such a powerful force in the disempowerment of the electorate. It substitutes human community and interaction for passive info-tainment. I don't know what people would be demanding - what sorts of things they would be fighting for - what ideals they would think important, but I'm sure it would happen. Which is why the "Industry" is being subsidized by the government (conversion coupons); television reinforces passive compliance.
