What first came to mind was black, like a cruel dark force. Some boring color like brown could also fit my perception of this sort of lifestyle.

A hazy grey, in my opinion. Not quite 'BLACK', you know, it ain't that bad. A thick hazy grey over a dark green.

Oh. I thought you were talking about weed smoke, like purple haze. Um, I was more thinking of London in the 1800's. The writers talked about how yellow the air was and how sticky it felt on the skin. But it wouldn't have made much sense if I'd just said "yellow", so I just said "smog" so that people would think of Los Angeles or some place similar.
