  • I feel like it is such a monumental task. I mean I am 20 years old and I still can't figure out English half the time. Besides, I feel like if I were to try and learn a language by myself I wouldn't know if I was right or wrong.
  • Absolutely, I'm learning Italian now, Portuguese next, then German.
  • I often feel I don't have a very good grasp of my own language, much less a foreign language. However, I can, and have learned to read some words, and make feeble translations of the written word. I would have no idea how to pronounce them, however.
  • I taught myself english. Though i can't tell you anything about grammar (never understood it) i write, speak, and read it perfectly. Next in line is japanese.

But slowly I am getting a grasp on it. . Yesterday I picked up a book that was written in French, and realized I was far from fluent. I could understand it for the most part, but not perfectly. I believe that the only way I could get a firm grasp on a language would be to immerse myself in an environment where it was the only language spoken. Self-study and even classroom instruction will only take you so far.
  • Competent, yes. But I think I really don't have the patience to do that everyday. Those are two different things.
