  • Well, would help to know what kind of car, but generally, most cars these days have a safety switch on the shifter that is activated by the brake pedal. In some cars it's mechanical, but most cars it is electronic and activated by a button switch that is released when you push on the brakes. Quite often, it's also the switch that turns the brake lights on the back of the car on when you push the brakes, so if you loose one, you may loose the other, and it's really important for people to know you are stopping. If it's a car with mechanical linkage between the pedal and shifter, than you have an alignment issue in the linkage, but it sounds more likely to be an electric switch.
