  • It works the same way a hand stapler works, except that the staples are made from wire "on the fly" instead of from a stick like you usually buy for a swingline, for example. The copies are made first, stacked, then an electromechanical device forms and cuts a staple from a spool of wire, and then slams it through the paper like any other stapler. There might be some machines that use pre-formed staples, but the one I saw the insides of did not.
