It could be a reference to cropping, the removal of something by cutting it out of a picture.
It's an old weaver/sewing term from the middle ages that refers to what you have to do when you make a mistake. You have to cut out the part that is wrong, and weave/sew in the correct pattern.
the phrase come from the TV show full house from the actor that played joey when some one told him a joke he would say cut it out first with his hand take two fingers like scissors like he is cutting then with one finger point at the person and last with his thumb like he is hitchhiking he would throw back like get out that is were the phrase comes from that I know

A man interviewed on NPR used the phrased "cutting the salami too thinly to get to work." Did he just make this up? I haven't heard it before and don't see any other references in google.
