  • Why would they be? I don't get why there would be any debate on this. I'm not familiar with the system in the US but in the UK jurors are selected off the electoral register- which an illegal immigrant wouldn't be on. If they were on it, they wouldn't be illegal. In order to be in a position where they could be called up for jury duty they would have to be legal. Most illegal immigrants get away with being in the country because, in the bureaucratic sense, they don't exist- so how would they be called up for jury duty anyway?
  • Twelve good men, and true. That leaves out anything illegal, then. No.
  • Absolutely NOT !!
  • hell no they shouldn't even be over here!
  • no ,they need to be shipped back to mexico
  • No. Their educational and psychological ability to weigh the balance of justice may not be able to fathom our legal system. Cultural differances may also factor in here. You would not want a fundamentalist or extremist muslim sitting in on a rape case, whose culture believes and justify's such hate crime.
  • No one involved in the act of committing a crime can sit on a jury. Residing in a country illegally is a crime, hence the term "illegal immigrant."
  • No. They are not legal residents; therefore they are not the "peers" of the defendant.
  • Yeah sure, why not? The threat of jury duty hanging over their heads might actually deter a lot of illegal immigrants from coming into the country.
  • This is a hypothetical question, as it is currently illegal for a non-citizen to serve on a jury. If the jury box is full of "illegal immigrants," and another "illegal immigrant" is on trial, Will they be objective?
  • Not no but Hell No!
  • All immigrants who are ILLEGALLY in any country should be arrested and face a jury themselves! Then if they are found to be there under false pretences e.g.to escape criminal charges in their own country (not political persecution) or for purely economic reasons e.g.benefits or free medical care.they should be deported immediatley no appeals!
  • Of course not. They are *illegal* immigrants. They should not be in the US in the first place. Edit: Whoever trolled this answer... you have got to be kidding me right? These people have *illegally* entered a country! Why should they have the right to sit on a jury and decide if someone else is guilty or not of the same set of laws they have broken?
  • No. I think the key word people are overlooking in the immigration debate is 'Illegal'. It would be one thing if these were people with legal right to occupy the U.S., on green card or temporary visa, but these people are'nt even supposed to be here, much less be deciding the fate of civil cases involving legal citizens.
  • No.Not until they become legal citizens. I feel the same way about any illegal immigrant in any country.
  • I don't think they should
  • I can't speak for every state, but the Federal Juror Questionaire explanation at http://www.insd.uscourts.gov/Jury/qual_instruct.htm points out that you must be a citizen to serve on a Federal jury. I would imagine most states have similar requirements.
  • How about if the defendant is also an illegal immigrant?
  • si habla englesh? I Do!!! now realize you are a f'ing ILLEGAL (not that our presedent thinks this way) and take that foot out of your mouth and realize also what country you are in. no f'ing way they should be aloud to if i'm a fellon and i can't because i broke the law. the smae goes for being in the millitary right?
  • Absolutely not ! They don't even know our laws , our language or anything about us . Other than they can come over here have babies in our county hospitals and then apply for government assitance that we pay with our hard working tax money !!!!!!!! If you are wanting otlive in the USA ....LEARN ENGLISH , SPEAK ENGLISH AND LEARN AND LIVE BY OUR LAWS !!!!!!!! Don't come to me speaking spanish ..... I'll look straight at you and say SPEAK ENGLISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • No, they should not serve on juries. They are not citizens. I don't think anyone without full citizenship (having passed the test and being fully aware of the constitution) should serve on a jury.
  • My mistake. This was meant as a comment...RF The question asks about "illegal" immigrants. Not about Mexicans or South Americans or people from other countries. No one should be in the US without proper authorization. Simple concept. Next, Tiqueron, did as we often ask any down rater to do, explain his reason for the down rating. Now his reasoning is "exposed" and you can judge its soundness and his "logic." An extended discussion was a waste of everyone's time. Have you ever seen a debate that began with a faulty premise, resolve an issue? Auntie Em's answer still stands as the best response.
  • DO they pay taxes? Are they a part of the system in any other respect? I don't think so.
  • Good grief NO!!! (they aren't are they?) with all the other concessions/rights they are trying to give them, I wouldn't be surprised if they were allowed to. There's a reason they are called ILLEGAL immigrants, after all.
  • Hell no!
  • Not on any jury that I would be a party to. I believe the US Constitution guarantees our citizens the right to a trial by jury "of one's peers". I am not an illegal immigrant, I speak English, NOT Spanish, and know how to give a turn signal when I drive a vehicle! So I don't really think any illegal immigrants are my peers!
  • NO. Does the term ILLEGAL mean nothing? No way, no how.
  • Surely if you are an illegal immigrant you are already committing a crime. So NO!
  • Am illegal immigrant serving in a legal system, doesnt make much sense.
  • NO NO NO NO. Nor should they have been granted amnesty in that ruling for emergency supplies for the troops. ANNNND..... When I applied for a passport the government told me I was not a citizen, even though I was born in Florida I didnt know florida was outside the U.S. borders. So these people get in our country and I'm not allowed to leave. What is that about?
  • No--would they be on the voting rolls so they could be called? I don't think so.
  • I didn't deduct any points, but this may be one of the least intelligent questions I've ever seen on AB - and I've seen some doozies.
  • Hahaha... NO
  • Illegal immigrants are committing and have committed federal crimes. They are also NOT citizens. Only non-criminal citizens are allowed on juries and only non-criminal citizens SHOULD be allowed to serve in any capacity. Illegal immigrants shouldn't be here at all.
  • absolutely not
  • Generally, all immigrants, even those legally admitted for permanent residence, are excluded from juries - you have to be a US citizen.
  • Of course not, why the hell do we even let them live here if they are illegal? Many of them (not all) can't get good jobs and get welfare support, which means the taxpayer is paying for them live here illegally, besides the fact that they don't even pay taxes! If they are ever allowed to be jurors then I will sadly leave this great country.
  • This is joke question, right? Of course not. Beside, jurors are called from voting rolls in many states. They don't vote either, at least I hope not.
  • Yes - the day that Americans are allowed to serve on foriegn juries....
  • -4 for the stupid question
