Question

Help answer this question below.

I just started to have a problem with a 98 tahoe's steering, it seems to be a bit resistant and makes a very loud "power steering" noise which it did not make earlier today. the fluid level is good, is this the pump going or is it something

If belt tension is correct, and resevoir is full, it is likely the pump going bad.

Don't wait to have the pump replaced. I did that for too long and the rag joint snapped and I had no steering. I was going 40 on the Garden State Parkway and braked but veered right to the shoulder, and ito the woods. If I had been in traffic. Who knows. Google Rag Joint.

that has to be your power steering pump. mine done the same thing. it will just get worse a few months down the road and go out like mine did and it will be impossible to drive. Id go ahead and buy a new one if i was you. mine was only 80 dollars. but they are hard to put in.

Have you checked the belt that drives the power steering pump?  That's the first thing that I would suspect, based on what you describe.  It's normal for this belt to slip a little bit when you turn the steering hard all the way, producing what you might think of as a “power steering noise”.  Sounds to me like the belt is slipping more than it should, and under lighter steering where it shouldn't be slipping.  Perhaps the belt needs to be replaced.
