I would suspect it's the developmental stage of a watch that makes the determination. And whether or not the manufacturer can get a deal from a battery supplier.

Then I think you would be limiting the creativity of the watchmaker. Perhaps certain watches require unusual batteries, specific to the design of that timepiece. Since I'm not a watchmaker, I don't know for sure..but that's my guess! :) Happy Tuesday! :) ((hugs))

For the same reason not all stores use the same credit card machines, to annoy us to the point of wanting to rip our hair out. :)

Lol. I got 6 dead watches right now because I buy a new watch before I'll go get the battery changed:)
