Actually, some would argue that MacArthur was better; no general in history has been as sparing of his men's blood, or had as high a kill ratio, as MacArthur. (92,000 American battle deaths; 1,590,000 Japanese.) His troops sneered at his patrician ways and unfairly called him Dugout Doug, but even though his biographer William Manchester obviously despised him, his greatness shines through the contempt shown in _American_Caesar_. Brave Marines shuddered when they foresaw the Battle of Rabaul--amphibious assault against 100,000 crack troops, well supplied and entrenched--but MacArthur simply passed it by, island-hopping to "hit 'em where they ain't." The Japanese sat there wasting supplies and accomplishing nothing till the end of the war.

For my money, General Norman Scwarzkopf - for all his legendary temper was probably the most effective US military Commander - although fans of Generals Westmoreland and Abrams would probably disagree!
