A hissy fit is somewhat similar to a conniption fit or a tantrum, but is generally applied to someone who has already demonstrated diva-like or high-strung behavior.

Either way it is an irrational overreaction to a situation.

Hissy fit.... Shirley Temples and Daiquiri's are gonna be thrown around.

Conniption fit... Jack Daniels, Aunt Shirley and punches are gonna be thrown around.

A hissy fit has traditionally been what a female might do...

A conniption-fit has traditionally been more of a male thing. and yes included exaggerated Gestures.

A hissy fit is a short lived burst of anger. A conniption fit usually lasts longer and includes exaggerated gestures.

The spelling, for one thing. It's probably a regional thing, like 5&10 cent store and quarter stores, or liquor stores and package stores. West coast = lunch, east coast = dinner.

Not really but I always thought of a hissy fit as being a bit of a tantrum.
A conniption fit I thought of as more serious. More of a shock, horror, type of thing. I may be totally wrong of course.
