The best way to start eliminating cockroaches is by getting rid of you paper bags, newspapers or any wast paper that you may have or stored. The roaches like the glue composition in the paper. Keeping the house clean and free of spilled food especially if it is sweet. Other than that I have no idea of any herbal solutions.

My grandmother used to sprinkle bay leaves in the cabinets to keep pests away. The fruit of the Osage orange tree, the hedgeapple, is a natural roach repellent. Leave one hedgeapple per room for effective deterrence up to two months.

I don't know if its herbal but Vinigar is good! Just whip it over your kitchen benches and tables.
