The silver star is more prestigious. You get them both for similar reasons in war, but one is better than the other.

After the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, and the Distinguished Service Medal, you arrive at the Silver Star. It is awarded solely for heroism in combat against an opposing armed force. The Bronze Star is a lower decoration than the Silver Star, and may be awarded for heroism, or it may be awarded for achievement of service in operations against an opposing armed force. The Silver Star medal is the third highest award for valor in combat while the Bronze Star can be awarded for "administrative" reasons much like a Commendation Medal. The Bronze Star with "V" device, however, is a true award for bravery in combat.
