A transgression is any violation of a law, command, or duty. A transgression against God would be a sin. A transgression against an immoral law would not be a sin. Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God. In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God. a transgression and a sin are the same. in normal human society wch as we know is built on law, not every law that exists has morality as its foundation. long back when religion was more widespread and of greater influence in the day-to-day lives of people than we see today- lawmakers had very strong morality and incorporated their moral beliefs into laws. this is why the sin of adultery was made a crime on the law books of almost any society you care to name. as people shook off the moral constraints that bound them and began more and more to desire to live their own way, adultery ceased to be a CRIME. but to God it remains a SIN. so u can commit adultery today and not have anyone SUE YOU for a CRIME, but still you SIN against God because you have crossed over his law boundary. this is why God says, i am the Lord, i do not change. God does not change his law book, which is the Bible. all God's laws have complete righteous MORALITY as their basis and foundation, and He does not remove sins as times change. the word transgression means to go against an established law or commandment created by a higher authority. it can be the government, your mom or the Lord, depending on what we're looking at. U sneak out your house when you know your curfew is 9'30pm, you trangress the rules that govern your house. You commit adultery, you trangress the laws that govern God's house. to "transgress" literally means to GO AGAINST, TO CROSS OVER FROM ONE SIDE TO ANOTHER IN DEFIANCE OF AN ESTABLISHED RULE OR DUTY. with sin, the word means 'TO MISS THE MARK, TO FAIL TO PERFORM OR KEEP FROM PERFORMING AN ESTABLISHED THING SET IN PLACE BY GOD'. sin means u cross over from relationship with God, wch is obeying his law and walking in His way as a covenant partner thru His son Jesus. to sin means to "GO AGAINST GOD'S WAY, TO CROSS THE LINE FROM RIGHTEOUS LIVING INTO SEPARATION FROM GOD THRU AN ACTION, THOUGHT, WORD OR DEED. to sin IS to transgress, and if u search the scriptures u'll always see them used interchangeably, especially in the psalms by David. he says to God 'forgive all my transgressions, washe me free from my sin'. forgive me all the times i crossed you, broke your laws, forgive me every time i missed the mark and failed you. SIN= TRANSGRESSION hope it helps.
