When there is a 4th person, and it's a double date? I guess when people feel nervous, they bring friends to make themselves more comfortable. I don't know if you can really call it a date though at that point.

I guess I'm from an older generation, but before we got engaged, my husband and I always had someone along or went out in groups only. It was a way of making sure we went slowly and surely and things didn't get out of hand. I was only 14 when we met and there was no way that my parents would let me date. So he assembled larger groups of people of all ages and we got to know each other that way on 'dates'. Plus we spent a lot of time during the days just hanging out at the beach getting to know each other (we lived there). And then when we started dating for real, we usually had one of his friends along, again as a safeguard. I wanted to go slow and he respected that.
