  • Other than student/teacher?
  • The answer to that question depends on what you think about the Bible and the gospels in generally. I am Christian, but I believe in an anthropological/literary/historical interpretation of the Bible. I believe the Bible was written by people, people inspired by God, but people all the same. My studies into the historical Jesus and early Christianity have led me to believe that the gospel known as According to Matthew was not written by anyone named Matthew at all, and that the figure of Matthew (aka Levi)--the tax collector mentioned in Mark 2:14 and Luke 5:27--was attached to this gospel by Church Fathers at a later date. So, my answer would be, if by "Matthew" you mean the tax collector, then his relationship with Jesus was one of personal apostleship. If by "Matthew" you mean the author of the gospel, then his relationship with Jesus was one of a faithful believer in the early years of Christianity after Jesus' death, a scribe who wanted to spread the good news about his saviour, yet who had never known him personally.
