Throughout most of history, education was done at home. It has only been in the last few hundred years that we have put all these kids together in schools. Children who are homeschooled do not necessarily suffer from social backwardness, any more than private schooled kids do. If the government wants to stop the opting out of children from schools, it should address the problems within them. I am glad to say that I sent my children to a good Christian school (I am Australian), as the government schools have deteriorated here (and I have taught in them, so I know).

In some parts of the country, the violence is very real and very dangerous in schools. Being forced into gangs or being killed occurs. Drugs are pushed on them. The schools, even if they wanted to (which I am certain most do), cannot provide an adequate education. They are not funded sufficiently to have enough teachers or even enough textbooks and other basic supplies for the students. I do not have children but, if I did and I lived in an area like that, I would homeschool them.
