I've had lots of employers call up and check references. In fact, when I was in London, the onus is on you to get two references to call them to make sure you check out. I had to do this and it was a lot of work.

Yes, I have called for references on potential employees. I do not call if I am hiring cashiers, but for anyone being hired into the meat or bakery departments I do call. I need to know if they can really do the things they say they can. I also ask alot of hygiene questions.

It really depends. Here in the US most companies will only verify the dates you were employed when called for references at the skilled professional levels. They are afraid of lawsuits. Still, a lot of employers will still call the references listed to get even that tiny bit of info, to demonstrate the veracity of the resume.

Yes. I've had calls from some of my former co-workers future employers, questioning me about their work ethic and such. It's a way for them to get an idea of how they'd handle the job.

I'm now on a committee who has hired, and is still looking to hire. Yes, we did call references of those candidates we seriously considered for hire.
