I believe random chance, AND natural selection explain the universe and particularly the Earth as it has become. Random Chance only really applies to the big bang - but no informed believer in evolution would believe that intelligent primates learned to use tools and developed strategic skills simply due to random chance - it's much more complex than that. . I don't believe in intelligent design, not because I'm some sort of god-hater - rather I just don't believe any sort of deity is necessary in the grand scheme of things, given the vast evidence there is for all accepted scientific theories; and the introduction of god into scientific discourse actually belittles how magnificent the scientific truth really is.
