What is the difference between 'payback' and 'revenge?'

Pay back is when you do something to get even with someone who has wronged you.....revenge is what you feel when something bad happens to that person or when you yourself have done something to get even with that person....you feel revenge that they have gotten what you think they deserve for what they did to you.

to me they seem pretty much the same. the person still wants something bad to happen to the one who wronged them or a loved one... but that is if you mean the word 'payback' in the bad sence. or another way is- i could payback someone some money i owed them or payback someone for something i lost of theirs- those are just examples...

Revenge is usually based in some idea of justice. ("An eye for an eye.") Payback is about wanting the other person to feel pain, perhaps an unjust amount of pain.

Payback refers to the actual returned item (in the case of revenge, it likely would be an equivalent amount of the pain and suffering) whereas revenge would be the act of avenging or the actual retaliation.
