By staying real, being bold, and going for what you want. And it wouldn't hurt to buy a new pair of designer jeans.

Sometimes it's luck... I had never found a GF. I was hanging out with some friends at college who had a booth for rush week about a DND club. A guy and girl came up to the booth and joined. A couple of weeks later, she and he were in front of me playing DND, and I heard her say something like he wasn't her BF. I checked, and it was true. Within a couple of weeks we were dating. (She'd seen me, and was interested. Joined the group to get to know me a little better!) FIRST GF. Lasted a couple of years, and I messed up. (No... Didn't cheat on her, but screwed up other ways.) She started dating another guy. I was a mess. Was at a DND game with friends when my first GF (then an ex) walked in with her new BF. When we took a break, I quit the game. A girl who was there just doing homework, noticed the way I was acting, and asked what was wrong. I told her and we went for a long drive and talk. A month to 6 weeks later she moved in with me, and a couple of years later we married. (15 years together, two boys, and divorced.) A couple of years later, I met someone through one of the older "rendevous"-type sites (enter your profile and search others). She contacted me. We dated a little more than a year, but both of us knew it wasn't going to go any further. Another girl (lady) contacted me through AIM based on my location (she was looking for relatives here, and expanded her search). We talked a while on AIM, then on the phone, then she visted over the weekends for a few months. THEN she moved in. A couple of years later we were enganged, and in 2004 we married. Like I said, at least for me, it was just dumb luck.
