  • Music purchased on iTunes is only playable on iPods. This page has information on stripping iTunes' copy protection scheme: http://www.bpurcell.org/blog/index.cfm?mode=entry&entry=1036
  • If you have purchased music through the iTunes music store online, you can most easily load it onto an iPod music player. The software will automatically recognize your player when you plug it in, and you can drag and drop tracks onto your player, easy as pie. If your mp3 player is not an iPod, that can be a problem. Music purchased at the iTunes music store may not be transferred to your player, which is a trick Apple pulls to make you buy one of their mp3 players to play tracks from their music store. However, there is some software available online that can be used to tamper with iTunes in order to make it recognize your player. This is free "shareware" software, but keep in mind that Apple may consider it illegal to tamper with their iTunes software. http://www.hymn-project.org/ http://www.tunebite.de/website/v2/en/home.php?affiliate=60240 iTunes is not the only software to organize your music files on the computer. A non-iPod mp3 player usually comes with its own software system that you can use to load your mp3 player with your music files. That software won't have some of the fun "playlisting" options that iTunes does and it can't be used to purchase from iTunes, but for loading your music files it works just as well. I know my Rio player has a loading program that I'm very happy with, and I've used Audiograbber and Musicmatch to load files from my CDs onto the computer. (psst- your mp3 loading system can recognize ANY mp3s on your system however they may have gotten there, as long as you can sort them into your music library). There are also other online music stores that you can use to purchase music on the internet. If you want to avoid iTunes because of your player or out of simple disgust for the way they exclude non-Apple hardware, here are a few other sites: http://www.napster.com/ http://www.rhapsody.com/ http://ind-music.com/ Keep in mind that these other services have their issues as well, and Apple will sometimes tweak their iPods to refuse to play music from these competing stores.
