Lots of reasons. He is Our Holy Father, He is infallible, He is leader of the Roman Catholic Church, in short, he is the human closest to God.

I don't get it either. (I am so getting DR'ed for this) To me it just seems like Catholics make the pope into an idol...

He is the head of the Catholic Chruch. He is elected by the Cardinals when the previous Pope dies. Christ said to Peter that on him he would build his church and Peter was the first Pope.

I'm not catholic so I don't understand. However, even in our church our "pastor" is not viewed as any closer to God than anyone else. It is a mystery to me, but for those who are catholic it seems to be quite a somber religious meaning.

He's the leader of a religion with around a billion adherents. Religion aside, he's also a head of state (the Vatican). I'm not Catholic though, so I have scant knowledge about the Pope and what he does.

me either. the pope IS fallable. he's human - any human is capable of mistakes. pope is a MAN-MADE title - God didn't come down and say "so and so is the pope" NO-ONE is closer to God because of a man made title. I believe there is something there. i choose to call it God because i dont know what else to call it. but i dont believe in the bible, church (God is everywhere) commandments or that any one person is less closer to heaven because of thier sexuality, beliefs etc. If millions of people declared me dead - does that make me dead?... nope.. nor does millions calling the pope, pope, mean he's any closer to God than i am.
