I thought this was the case for years. I was raised Christian in the bible belt of the central mid-west. I was always told that Muslims were non-religious and backwards in thinking. It wasn't until I met the woman that has become my wife that I started to look into it. She is an Egyptian born in Saudi Arabia and she worked for me while she was finishing college. I liked to get close to all my employees so they would be able to open up and talk to me if something should happen at work. I was out at dinner with her one day and I offered her some lasagne from this great italian place and it had sausage in it. She told me she wasn't allowed to, nor did she want to eat pork. I asked why and she explained to me that she was Muslim and I began speaking with her about the beliefs of Islam from square one talking about the 5 pillars.
After about 4 hours of discussion we made it a point to at least once per week go out to dinner and discuss this since I was so intrigued to speak to someone from that faith which until then was completely shrouded in mystery to me.
After a few months and my own research "Islam for Dummies" and a few other great reads, I converted.
During my research, I was consistantly skeptical. I thought that every thing in the Qur'an was blasphemous and that none of it was possible in any way. I assumed that Mohammed was possessed or on drugs/having a psychotic break. After months of research though, I realized that this could not be the case. and here's why:
Consistancy
There isn't a drug out there (trust me, I have done most of them and now work in a rehab center) That can give someone hallucinations (as would have to be the case for Mohammed to have 'seen an angel') That gives the same consistant hallucination EVERY TIME for 23 years.
There is no form of psychotic break (my rehab center is attached to a psych hospital and I'm in school to be a therapist) That consistantly gives the same delusions.
So if it couldn't be drugs or psychosis, the next option given is demonic posession.
If Mohammed was possessed by a demon, and you believe this to be true, you are holding the truths about demons in that they can not live anywhere that the word of God is spoken. Of course, Muslims will say "The Qur'an is the word of God so Mohammed PBUH coudln't have been posessed", but that is using Islamic truth to support and protect Islamic truths. If you are skeptical of Islam, that logic doens't make sense. So I'll say it from the Christian perspective I was raised with.
In the bible there are many stories of demonic posession. In all of these cases, the mere utterance of God made the demons flee from their host and enter swine that would drown themselves. If you are looking at it from a Christian standpoint supporting the bible, you MUST support that demons can't live in a space that is in true belief and constant utterance of the name of God. Allah is Arabic for God and thus, the utterance of Allah would evacuate a demonic presence. No one can argue that Mohammed was stating that he was carrying with him the word of Allah.
If you are Christian, you then MUST believe that Mohammed could not have been posessed, nor could he have been on drugs, nor could he have been going through a psychotic episode.
I have studied this througholy from both sides, I am a religious philosophies minor, raised Christian and converted to Islam. My aunt lives on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic and my Grandma works and lives at her church.
I hope that you have read my wall of text and I hope you take into account my personal experience to the statements I gave and I hope this answers your questions.
Oh, lol, okay, I just reread the question and to answer it, no I don't think that we would believe it today. No one believes in what happened 1500 years ago with Mohammed or 2000 years ago with Isa peace upon them both. If you are Christian, you would discredit the words of someone in todays age saying these things by saying "the bible said Jesus was the messiah, this guy is delusional" and if you were Muslim, you would say "Allah has said Mohammed was the final prophet" No one would give the person any credit right off the start.

Great answer, Spengo (+6), but how did you discount the possibility of lies and misleading? This is one of the biggest issues I have with christianity. I don't feel man can be trusted.

as far as lies and misleading goes...if a person is truly a religious person, one whom God has chosen to bring forth His word, that person will be incapable of lying in this instance. Although people will say "the prophet may not have been working through God", to which I must answer that there are things in the Koran that, weren't scientifically proven until the late 1900's involving embryology and cosmology. No human could have known these things. If a human couldn't know it, then a non-human entity must have been working...if that is the case and we have ruled out demonic posession...we are left with only God.

What are some examples of things that were unknown/unproven in the koran?
by Anonymous on November 12th, 2008
For example, the shape of a fetus during pregnancy before the invention of ultrasounds. The Koran mentions that the Universe is constantly expanding which we didn't know until Hubble was up. There are many of other examples I'll post more later. I don't know all the details but the gender of honey-bees was an interesting one..where the Koran stated that the worker bees were male and went to the queen in hive. The was before we had magnifying glasses or the study of insects anywhere near that accurate. Those are just to name a few, I'll post them when I have time...I'm actually awaiting my wife picking me up from work so that we can go to Mosque for our afternoon prayer. I'll be back on later tonight and I'll post more then.

Thanks Spengo. Enjoy your evening.

Another excellent post. You could add that around 1.4 billion Muslims have been instructed by the HQ to curse satan and do so many times every day. Does that point to the HQ being the work of demon, satan, devil?

Hahaha! People are ignorant.

While I agree 100% with your post Dave, what prompted that in this thread?
