Yes. When I first came to Spain I had no Spanish at all. A phrase book and a lot of sign language and desperation helped! A good memory helps too, repeating the right word or phrase when it's said to you and working it into your vocabulary as soon as possible. A big friendly smile and a genuine attempt to speak the lingo also got me lots of help and co-operation and some very good friends too. I wouldn't say that I'm fluent even now (7 years later!) but I get by ok and it's fun learning.

Take some support classes that includes grammar, structure and of course idioms will help a lot! I did that when I traveled to America to learn english after I finished highschool
