Why do people rate answers that require an opinion negative, then not offer their own opinion?

This has been a recurring problem on AB for a while. Joel has said a new rating system is on the way soon (next couple of weeks), that will help address this. Hang in there Robin. You're doing a good job.

Mainly if it affends you i think that should be the only reason to rate it low like if they are cusssing in it alot of something of that nature but i think if its well said and stated it should get a real answer ive been rated F for my beleifs that i put in there about god.

Probably because they looked at the question hoping for an answer, because they didn't know the answer, and were disappointed with the questions. I've never done it, but I tend not to give negative feedback unless the answers are VERY unhelpful.

Happens to me all the time, but at least I know who's doing it the majority of the time.

When someone dings an opinion answer - one that shouldn't be rated at all, imho - he probably assumes payback from the ticked-off users whose opinions he dinged. Or maybe he simply wants to pay someone else back for a low rating on one of his answers. So he finds one written by his target, and dings. In that case, the goal is retaliation, not answering. Why these people involve completely unrelated material in their quest for justice - is a good illustration of how anger can cloud minds and darken thoughts. I wish Answerbag had a separate "no ratings" area for opinion and poll-type questions so the people who wrote those answers won't suffer ding-age. All in good time, I guess.

I have this problem to ! Its really annoying when the person has a different opinion and cant accept your so they rate you down ! But they never do it if you have facts ! I thought what we do (giving opinions) was a really big part of the site ! Damn Them !!

They either didn't read your thoughtful well composed answer or they did not wish to hear what you had to say. I don't mean to editorialize or climb on a soap box (which means I will) but I've been dinged a few times just for being honest. For example, Do you want me to recognize that you can write a physics question out of a fourth grade text book or do you want me to actually answer the physics question? Can anyone see where I'm going with this? Are the people who ask the questions on religion even interested in differences of opinion? My reason for joining answerbag was to generate thought among like minded individuals. Now, I'm thinking of leaving to find something a little more academic.

I have got some negitive ratings as well, It seems when the truth of a matter comes in on the negitive side people tend to take offense. Then dont seem to feel that they need to comment with their own opinion on the subject. To coin the phrase: The truth hurts sometimes. You are doing fine, All of you are doing fine, dont let that stuff get you down.
