Yes, because the Bible is a social document written over centuries in a a mass of forever changing cultures and so it's obviously going to become outdated. The sooner people realise this, the better. There are many more questionable statements, such as if a woman is raped, the rapist must be forced to marry her as HIS punishment. What?!

well, the father is the one who has to take care of his daughter, and if she ends up pregnant, and such.. so the money goes to take care of the daughter (and or baby if one should come) however, i cant remember right now if they would be forced to marry should she get pregnant. this is also as a deterrent for men going around taking peoples daughters for these purposes and just dumping them without care. i dont think its so much slaver, property or prostitution, as it is paying for damages to the household that received the damages. if the man were to pay the girl, then THAT would be prostitution, since that would be incentive for her to go "make a living" that way. and the point was that this was not an honorable thing to do or have happen. hope that answers it for you
