My understanding is it's one free and then they're a buck or something.

They give you one free gift. and then there are sometimes a "sponsered" gift that you can give for free as well. Others you will have to pay for. Now with facebook, there are LOADS of other applications that will allow you to send free gifts, so you don't need to use the inital "gifts" application they include.

By my understanding, yes, you have to pay for little icons that costs $1. It's not make-believe, its real money that they're asking for. (When they ask you for USD, or US dollars on the form, you know that you have to pay for it). A better option is the Free Gifts application.

The gift you gave was probably the "free" gift you are allowed to give in the beginning. They used to have it so that you could give away one free gift and that's it. Most of the gifts cost $1 USD. However, there are now gifts you can give for free which are basically advertisement gifts.
