Subjunctive is one of the most complicated tenses in the english language, you use it when you put two thoughts together using two conjugated verbs. The first clause of the sentence influencing the tense of the second clause. For example:(use in present simple) I wish that you would stop that. In this case, "I wish that" changes "You would stop that" from past-conditional to a demand in present simple. Example: (Past tenses) I wish you were here. In this case, "I wish" changes "You were here" from past simple to a present demand. I thought he had known. In this case "I thought" changed "He had known" from past perfect to past simple. The subjunctive is the hardest tense to learn, because it is a "tense"(rather a mood) that combines all other tenses. When I teach the subjunctive it usually takes twice as many classes than one of the "normal" tenses. If you need more information, follow this link, it helped me the first time I had to explain it to a class. http://www.wordpower.ws/grammar/gramch09.html
