Yes to both, it was very common in the 70s before lawyers and news stories scared the hell out of us all. If I wanted to go somewhere, I had to use my thumb from about 14 to 17 when I got my own car.

Yes to both. Once a bunch of us were driving this old VW bus to Tuscon to go dancing and one of the rods blew. There were about 6 of us and we threw out our thumbs and we got picked up by a guy and his girlfriend driving a school bus to Cali. One of my girlfriends and I once picked up a "trusty" (trust fund hippie) on our way out to some hot springs in New Mexico. We knew he was ok because his backpack looked like it cost more than my car. :)
