When sunburns fade away, is the skin left in its original colour? Or does it turn tanned?

Sunburns don't "fade," they're replaced by new layers of skin. The color of the newly-created skin cells is not affected by the burn, in the same way that drawing on your skin with a marker doesn't affect new skin.
