Most of the time it is soul-destroying. But there are those like me who made it through well enough to be able to be there for others and make sound decisions in life. SOme have made it to higher stations than my own :)

It would be painful being shunned by others. I wouldn't want to put my heart on the line by trusting those who have only shown me scorn.

I don't think there's any way to tell predicating one's future on their past. Depending on the person they might lash out or fall into a destructive cycle of violence or drugs...or they might not, they might use their circumstances as fuel to want to better themselves. It's that nature vs nurture argument..how much of who we are is our environment and how much is genetic?
