  • Although businesses have postage meters, Post Offices have PVIs (Postage Validation Imprint). They are connected to our retail computers (there are several types). In order to print a PVI label, it requires numerous keystrokes on the machine. So, a postal clerk might use a PVI for an 84 cent international label, or they might just sell you a stamp. Some people think they could give us a stack of mail and we could "run it through our meter." Our machine does not work like a postage meter and it would take us longer to print PVI labels for each letter than it would take to stick stamps on. Hope this answered your question.
  • In addition to the answer by postmuffin above one might also note that some POs have self-service kiosks that print out value imprints. Chevalier Daniel C. Boyer
