Hi Scotland from Nashville, Tennessee. Rabbits multiple over and over and over and over. its a safe bet that your bunny has friends, many friends. Keep a sharp eye out and you will probably will see its cousins, brothers, sisters.....whatever!

Rabbits have also been a source of environmental problems when introduced into the wild by humans. Because of their appetites, and the rate at which they breed, wild rabbit depredation can prove problematic for agriculture. Gassing, barriers (fences), shooting, snaring and ferreting have been used to control rabbit populations, but most effective are diseases such as myxomatosis ('myxo' for short), and calicivirus. In Europe, where rabbits are farmed on a large scale, they are protected against myxomatosis and calicivirus with a genetically modified virus. The virus was developed in Spain, and is beneficial to rabbit farmers. If it were to make its way into wild populations in areas such as Australia, this could create a population boom, since those diseases are the major threats to the rabbits' survival.

I live on the Pennines and see quite a few wild rabbits (even a blue mountain hare on one occasion) and in answer to your question... there's likely to be quite a few rabbits in the vicinity probably living in several warrens.

Yes, keep an eye on this rabbit. Is it rather large? Could be the infamous Were Rabbit! How is the cheese in Scotland anyway?

HI JOHN, THANKS FOR TAKING TIME TO ADVISE. I DO SUSPECT IT PROBABLY HAS MANY FRIENDS, THE PROBLEM IS, MAYBE I'M WATCHING A DIFFERENT RABBIT EVERYTIME, AND THEY'RE DOING THIS APPEARANCE THING IN SHIFTS TO CONFUSE. HERE'S ANOTHER ONE FOR YOU. A STRANGE THING IS HAPPENING IN THE U.K., WHEN I WAS A CHILD, I WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT TO 'SALUTE THE MAGPIE', WHEN ONE APPEARED, AS THEY APPARENTLY BROUGHT BAD LUCK, AND I ONLY EVER SAW ABOUT TEN MAGPIES IN TEN YEARS UP UNTIL MAYBE 5 YEARS BACK? NOW, THERE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF THEM OVER HERE, TRAVELLING IN LARGE FAMILIES, BULLYING BLACKBIRDS, HEDGE SPARROWS, CROWS, EVEN LARGE RAVENS. CAN SOMETHING BE GOING ON FURTHER UP THE ECO CHAIN? OR THE WEATHER? AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW JOHN, SCOTLAND'S WEATHER WAS KNOWN FOR BEING 'WILD, WET & WINDY', BUT NOW WE'RE FIGHTING TO PUT AIR CON IN OUR HOMES AS THE SUMMERS ARE UNBELIEVABLY HOT, WITH GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNINGS ON 'HOW TO COPE WITH THE HEAT'. THIS IS PUZZLING TO US, AS WE'RE STRUGGLING TO PHYSICALLY, [AND MENTALLY], DEAL WITH IT. WE'RE A NATION OF WOOLLIE JUMPERS, AND THICK 'BROTHS'. I SPENT A NUMBER OF YEARS LIVING IN THE MIDDLE EAST, AND WAS GLAD TO LEAVE THE HEAT BEHIND, BUT I THINK IT'S FOLLOWED ME HOME! HOW'S NASHVILLE?, FABULOUS PLACE. KIND REGARDS, ELIZABETH.

jANGOBEAN AND JOHN have clearly answered your question accurately.

rabbits are fine by themselves, even European ones. And there may be other rabbits around you don't see. It had to come from somewhere so Im sure there are other rabbits in the territory.

I've read through most of the responses and agree that the rabbit (or rabbits) are fine by themselves. However I believe that it's not likely that he/she is solitary. I am so happy that you enjoy observing the animal. Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the U.S. my wife and I have all sorts of mammalian and bird wildlife to observe and it's such a thrill (deer, rabbits, bears, the goldfinch, squirrels, etc.). We love your country though it has been years since we have been there (1982 being our last visit). I am saddened to read of the warming trend you have been experiencing. I hope and pray it is not due to global warming and only temporary within the framework of your life but I fear that it is a trend that will not back off for a very long time. Don't be surprised if you have some unusually cold or snowy Winters though because the warmer the air the more water vapor it can hold. I know that it's paradoxical but believe me, general increases in temperature can generate more snow in certain circumstances. A case in point, Antarctica is truly a desert. There is very little precipitation and that is because the air is too cold to contain much water vapor (which is the raw material for the clouds that provide precipitation in the first place).
