  • The first attempt only used high ductility materials in the frame ... it still shook far too much ... now they use computer controlled sensors and hydraulic rams and the building actually sits on rollers on rails ... when the earth shakes, the sensors detect the shaking and the building is "counter-shaken" by the rams to neutralize the vibrations ... the result is that the surrounding ground shakes, but the building stays still.
