The area in front of our house is made up of several tiled terraces and a small pool. The garden at the sides and back is covered with a substance called picon, which is small granules of volcanic ash - it absorbs the dew and prevents the topsoil from being blown away by the fairly constant breeze. Beyond the perimeter wall at the back and one side it's just natural open hillside.
