Wiser than us in some ways.

Animals are extremely intelligent. Look at how squirrels remember where they bury food for the winter. Look at pigeons and how they find their way home. Chimpanzees using tools. Dogs and cats warning their owners of fire in the house at night. This is just naming a few.....

Like all your other AB'ers I tend to believe that animals are very intelligent, only dumb to us who vcannot hear them, they communicate effectivley with each other on many levels. The tiniest creature is aware of threat to itself and the organization of the ant is phenomenal! My dog has genuine emtional intelligence too, she has a range of expessions to show what she's feeling, I can always tell when she's tuned in. She is also wise enough to accept her lot in life, thought it's not the most exciting of situations.

Humans must be the dumbest animal of all! OK, we can define intelligence to suit us humans, but consider this. We don't, or don't want to, understand our environment, unlike the rest of the animal kingdom. Humans kill for example whales and dolphins, ignoring that they communicate with one another in a way we are too dumb to figure out. Worse still, we possibly do not want to learn their way of communicating and that does not raise us in the scale of things. So, animals are intelligent except one, the human animal.

I dont think theyre just "dumb animals" - chimpanzees for example - just watch Animal plantet! But, having said that dogs are halfway there! - yes im a cat person! meow! http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/678035 - this is proof of my above statement!!

The problems with humans,is that they think intellect is equated to intelligence.Scientists have come to false conclusions on how smart animals really are.I would say in many ways they are much smarter than us.

I believe ALL animals are intelligent in their own way and they ALL have feelings and sentience etc. The smartest animal, I think are Elephants: Their brain is more complex than ours with just as many nuerons (compared with dolphins who have very few nuerons), they have a deep emotional life and will bury their dead and stand over a body for days and days, they have been known to even bury dead human bodies, they are highly altruistic, they have the lowest birth-to-adult brain ratio indicating they are the animal with the lowest amount of instictive behavior and the most learning, they allomother, they understand syntax, they live in families, they have proven self awareness, they are complex problem solvers and are complex tool users. They have a highly complex communication system that allows them to hear other elephants over 30km away. They are said to be "the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind." And "The Indian Elephant is Said Sometimes to Weep." Charles Darwin.
