Do not use "pay to publish" houses. Submit to agents and/or to publishers. Be prepared for many rejections

You only have to pay to get a book printed if it's a vanity book. These are books that the author pays to get published. Many well known authors have used this method to get started. If you go to http://www.lulu.com/ you can write a vanity book without paying one cent. An easier way is to not write a whole book, but rather a short story and try sending it to several magazines which solicit manuscripts. After you gain a reputation as an author of short stories, you can move up to become an author of books. I started writing as a university student.

If you believe that your story is worth publishing, then you can self-publish. John Grisham and Stephen King started this way before large publishing houses noticed them. You may check the following blog sites about self-published book authors and their books: http://www.xanga.com/myxlibris http://www.iblogme.com/booklover/ http://myxlibris.blogspot.com/
