I grew up in a Mexican/Jewish neighborhood in Southern California. No, they weren't Mexican Jews. We just had the only neighborhood in the town where I grew up that had enough Jewish families to be noticed. We knew not to go to their houses between sundown on Friday and sundown on Saturday. (Saturday was their party night!) Being practicing Jews, they really did live their religion. They ate Kosher and never did anything that could be considered work, except maybe drive to the temple in Riverside or to the synagogue in San Bernardino in their cars. Both were about the same distance, so they had a choice. From what I saw in my friends and what I read in the Bible, Judaism is a religion which is very cultural. In the Army, I would meet Jews who were very proud of their Jewish heritage, yet were Atheists. That was difficult for me to understand.
