A common problem with the Jetta is the ignition switch. It can cause an engine to crank just fine but not start, or to stall after starting do to bumps in the road etc. Symptoms of cranking and not starting would be the idiot lights on the dash, such as oil light, over temp etc will turn off when the key is moved from on to start. To change the ignition switch, there are many online helps. The key part of the switch is not changed. The contact block on the back of it is. Maybe 40 dollars. I found one that suggested taking the steer shaft loose at the floor. It looks like a universal joint. This saves you the trouble of needing a special puller.
