Does anybody else feel like we overuse the word 'that' when we write/speak? What are the guidelines for using it?

lol when i'm working on a paper and i only have 4 more lines, i'll do everything i can to throw in that word...that's me being honest however i try not to use it that often in casual speech otherwise it just sounds like i'm stalling in trying to make my point

Not so much as we overuse the word "like". For example, it could have been left out of this question without detriment to the grammatical structure of the sentence. This was not an attack, just an observation. I have never found a significant overuse of the word "that".
