I have just gotten a 40 gallon tank that once housed a reptile. I want to put fish in it. How do I clean it so that it is safe for tropical fish?

Do not use any soap or soap-containing cleaners. Get some pure ammonia from Wal-Mart (it should not foam when shaken) and use that diluted with water if there are any hard stains. After the cleaning wash it out with some water again. You could also try pure alcohol. Just stay away from any bactericidal agents (soap, lysol, etc.) or your tank will take ages to cycle.
