I had a 1993 Honda Civic that was recommended to have the timing belt changed every 50,000. I owned the car for 235,000 miles and I had the timing belt changed 3 times. The mechanic should be able to tell if the belt is showing wear. It could cause much more serious damage if you don't have it changed.

The answer to your question depends on the year, make, and engine in the car. Timing belt change intervals vary considerably depending on these variables as well as the cost of replacing it. $550 doesn't sound that bad but if you don't trust this mechanic, you should get a second opinion from another shop.

$550 is outrageous! the belt is maybe $20 or so! that job should take no longer than 1 hr!! see if someone in your family can do it for you!

$500 is crazy, i live in south africa and we've got the very weak rand over here but.... i changed mine 2 months ago and costed me R150 for the belt and R200 for labour so.....convert that to $'s.
